Homer Smith, an itinerant Black handyman traveling through the Southwest, is enlisted (almost against his will) by a small group of German-speaking nuns to help build them a chapel, and despite cultural and religious differences, an unlikely bond of mutual respect and shared purpose grows between them. William E. Barrett's short novel was adapted into the film that won Sidney Poitier the Academy Award for Best Actor.
