Anne Frank kept this diary while hiding with her family and four others in a concealed annex above an Amsterdam office building for over two years during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, until they were discovered and deported in 1944. Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp shortly before the war's end, but her diary -- by turns funny, self-critical, and remarkably perceptive about human nature -- survived and became one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust ever published.
