In 1855 Oregon Territory, nine-year-old Ben is called home from boarding school when his father is left paralyzed and unable to speak after a stroke. With his older brother and sister working the fields, Ben takes charge of caring for their father and becomes convinced that if the three of them can finish building the barn their father had planned, he will recover.
