Robinson Crusoe
Overview & Summary
Shipwrecked alone on a remote tropical island for nearly three decades, Robinson Crusoe must build shelter, cultivate food, and fend off dangers using only his wits and the salvaged remnants of his ship, eventually befriending and "civilizing" a native man he names Friday after rescuing him from cannibals. Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel, often cited as one of the first English novels, established the survival-adventure genre and remains a foundational (if now critically contested) work about colonialism, self-reliance, and civilization versus nature.
