Love You, Soldier
Overview & Summary
Seven-year-old Katie Roberts watches her father leave for World War II, and over the following years she and her mother lean on new friendships -- especially with their downstairs neighbor and her mother's pregnant best friend Louise -- to get through the uncertainty of wartime New York. When a telegram finally arrives, Katie's family is changed forever, but the story ends with quiet hope as her mother remarries. Amy Hest's spare, first-person narrative offers a child's-eye view of the American home front during WWII.
