Invisible Man
Overview & Summary
An unnamed Black narrator recounts his journey from the Jim Crow South to Harlem, encountering betrayal and exploitation by nearly every institution he trusts -- a Black college, a paint factory, a radical political organization -- as he comes to understand himself as socially "invisible," seen by others only through the distorting lens of race rather than as an individual. Ralph Ellison's 1952 novel won the National Book Award and is considered one of the most important American novels of the 20th century.
