In 1940, thirteen-year-old Anna Hirsch and her family are deported from Germany to Gurs, a brutal French refugee camp, before Anna and other Jewish children are relocated to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a small French village whose Christian residents risk their lives to shelter them. Based on the real history of Le Chambon, which sheltered thousands of Jews under the leadership of Pastor André Trocmé, Carol Matas's novel dramatizes both the horror of the Holocaust and an extraordinary true story of collective courage.
