Overview & Summary

An unnamed German boy narrates his childhood friendship with Friedrich Schneider, his Jewish next-door neighbor, as the rise of the Nazi party gradually strips Friedrich's family of their rights, safety, and eventually their lives, while the narrator's own family becomes entangled -- willingly or not -- with the regime. Hans Peter Richter's novel, based partly on his own childhood in Nazi Germany, shows the machinery of the Holocaust through the eyes of an ordinary child watching it unfold next door.
