Ned Begay, a Navajo teenager, is sent to a government boarding school where he is punished for speaking his own language -- only for the U.S. Marines to later recruit him and other Navajo speakers during World War II to develop an unbreakable code based on their native tongue. Joseph Bruchac's novel dramatizes the real history of the Navajo Code Talkers, whose code was never cracked by the Japanese and who fought in some of the war's fiercest Pacific battles.
